By this ceremony, may all animals here today and all sentient beings in the animal realm be released from pain and suffering, fear and despair. Giving rise to the heart of compassion, we conduct this ceremony that it may benefit them, resulting in a healthy, joyful life. May they frolic freely in a field of bliss forever. — Pet Blessing service
Hazy Moon Priest Laurie Kyoji Anderson’s love of animals and deep respect for ceremony gave birth to our annual Pet Blessing a decade ago. Some Sangha members bring their pets to the outdoor event while others bring photos to place on the altar. By offering chants, incense and flowers, and by reciting the names of our pets, we are acting on their behalf to liberate them from suffering and bring them to great joy
“We are atoning for them,” Kyoji explains. “All of my pets have been my teachers, and I just want to recognize and honor that.”
